The Active Ingredient
...is bismuth sub-salicylate, otherwise known as '2-hydroxy-2H,4H-benzo[d]1,3-dioxa-2-bismacyclohexan-4-one.'
Just how it works 'is not well documented,' says Wikipedia, but is assumed to be some combo of: a) coating irritated tissues, thus slowing expulsion of fluids into digestive system; b) reducing inflammation of stomach and intestine lining and; c) killing some bacteria;
Once nicknamed 'The Pink Stuff' in early advertisements, it is also the color of Argentina's presidential palace (ie La Casa Rosada, literally 'The Pink House'
