That Other Prog Band...

If you like Coldplay, and millions do, there's no reason you shouldn't be equally enamored of Doves and their high-quality, serious, rich, melodic 'prog rock,' short for progressive, as we used to say... Admittedly, they don't have Chris Martin's gorgeous voice, but in every other respect they compare well indeed...

Hailing from the UK, this trio has been toiling away since high school, impressing music critics and fans since their debut album in 2000...

My first taste of Doves was a beautiful but very depressing track, alas, 'Here It Comes..' But on their second album something remarkable happened, their songcraft jelled, and a ray of sunshine shone on their sadness, a twinkle landed in their eye, and wisdom and whimsy seeped into the earnest grandeur of their musical brew... Song after song stood up and danced a paisley jig off that CD... It's been bliss ever since, every three years....

Today's Song of the Week is Doves' 'Kingdom of Rust'...

Let's take a video walk through the highlights of their critically acclaimed career... Here's the achingly beautiful 'Caught By The River,' live in 2002... they were trying this out as new material, ahead of their brilliant second album...

Their first song to soar into the stratosphere was 'There Goes The Fear'.. It became their first real UK radio hit, climbing all the way to #3! Here it is live on BBC...

Here's the grooveadelic 'Words' live at Glastonbury Music Fair....
