RIP Mama Africa

I'm sad to hear that legendary and beloved South African singer Miriam Makeba passed away Sunday night at 76, while touring in Europe. I still fondly remember her international smash, 'Pata Pata,' from when I was 8 years old. Here's a rare 1968 clip of Makeba performing this classic on Brazilian television...

Makeba's other very famous song was known as 'The Click Song,' actually a Xhosa wedding song, re-named in English for the clicking sound of her native tongue, Xhosa.. 'Pata Pata' is Xhosa for 'Touch Touch.'   This is a 1966 excerpt live from Bern's Salonger in Stockholm.

A few decades later Makeba appeared at 'Graceland-The Concert..' Her she duets with Paul Simon on 'Under African Skies'
