Crude

In case you've ever wondered what crude oil looked like, here's a dixie cup full I encountered last week in the boondocks of Colombia. This is a very heavy crude, which at room temperature would be thicker than tar, but here's it's been heated to 160F to pour more easily...

And pour it did... I took 150 pictures at and around the oil facility, which I hope to fashion into several memorable blog posts in the weeks to come.. Today is a somewhat oblique beginning, focused on the side details, written in a color, that, like crude oil, is 'black as the night itself'.

This isn't crude oil. It's just crude coffee, offered to us mid-morning to compensate our crude 4:30am awakening that morning, necessary to catch the 6am private plane out to the oil field..

Before the dawn's crack tour, they served us a crude, dawn's crack breakfast. My Dad used to call this a 'Texas breakfast,' when I was 6 years old and he worked, out of DC, as the Texas and Oklahoma field representative of Vista, a sort of domestic Peace Corps. A cowboy needs lot of protein in the morning if he's gonna rope himself some steer... If you want a thin waistline though, steer clear of it...
