The Way We Get By
Song/video of the week is Spoon's "The Underdog," surely among 2007's five most memorable... Like Shins and New P, Spoon are among the most consistently brilliant, enjoyable bands playing today. Their sound is unique but they can also scrounge and adapt - "The Underdog" channels Billy Joel, Paul Simon, and some Mariachi horns.. Enjoy!

"Spoon?" - "Spoon!" In 2000, home from a long day of work, my then-student then-boyfriend greeted me every evening with some new band that enthused him. "Neutral Milk Hotel," "Godspeed You Black Emporer," it always screamed "Obscurity!"
... then along came Spoon, with their tight, urgent songwriting, produced and played as crisply as an autumn day and as economically as Bonsai Tree. The song that won me over was 2003's "The Way We Get By," (video link is a montage of "The O.C.") which is Spoon-esque would also have spiced up any mid-period Beatles album. Another Spoon signature song is the hypnotic but uneasy voyeurism of "I Turn My Camera On"
