More Merrier
I saw another 40s Hollywood classic over the weekend, "The More The Merrier" with Jean Arthur. This film takes place during World War II, when Washington DC suffered a severe housing shortage and had roughly seven women to every man (men were off fighting). The plot, which tested the censors' boundaries, is about a woman, unhappily engaged, who reluctantly lends her room to an older man, who turns around and re-rents half his room to a younger man, who.. You get the idea. Highly recommended. Interestingly, it manages to be erotic by showing how badly the well-meaning stars restrain their passion (at least until the end...)
