Give Me Melody, Give Me Volume...
...and give me a close up view! Last night at Bowery Ballroom Christi & I took in a great show by Britain's Aqualung, purveyor of warm, haunting, romantic pop. It was a small crowd - 150-200 people maximum, even less during the set of warm-up act David Ford. Aqualung aka Matt Hanes played on piano, accompanied by his brother Ben on guitar, plus bass & drums, and occassionally xylophone, viola, and a contraption I'd never seen called a 'melodica. Aqualung has enjoyed three huge hit singles in Europe: 'Strange and Beautiful,' 'Left Behind', and the only one to get any US attention, 'Brighter than Sunshine.' They hail from Portsmouth and got their break when Volkswagen chose the languid 'Strange and Beautiful' for a UK commercial.
David Ford, on the other hand, is folk/soul with an attitude, who presents relationships as the messy affairs they usually are. My favorite of his song titles: "Cheer Up (You Miserable Fuck)"
