Lone Summer Dream

Film adventures: Last night I began the "Apu Trilogy," three neo-realist masterpieces filmed in late 1950s India by Satyajit Ray, which, while distinctly Indian, recall Rossellini and not one iota of Bollywood. The focus is vignettes in the life of a poor family in West Bengal, near Calcutta, where the father is a better poet than breadwinner and the mother is getting weary and disgusted. The child actors are a marvel, and that goes double for the toothless, emaciated old aunt that the mother grudgingly allows to live with them...
