Angkor Wat
In early 2003, when I was between jobs and traveling the world, I went to Thailand for 2 weeks. This included Bangkok, a trek through the northern hill country (where I broke my leg), a paradise island, and a side trip to Siem Riep, Camodia, to see the vast temple complex of Angkor Wat... I took a non-digital camera, alas. But Emerson was there last year:
The outer wall of this complex is 2 miles long, and is surrounded by a moat! Throughout the temple are walls covered with vast, intricate sculpture...
Cambodia is a very poor country that suffered unspeakable tragedy... Angkor Wat tourism has been a godsend, bringing investment, jobs, and development... Here's a close-up of the sculpted walls...
An inner courtyard...
Angkor Wat is such a symbol for the country that it's graced every Cambodian flag since 1863...
